Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY STARTS HERE

You know what, when you’ve been in this business as long as we have, you learn a few things. Sure, you’ve got to live in the present, savour the moment and not let life pass you by. That’s not all though. You have to keep an eye on the future, or else you’ll end up with nothing left to savour at all.

This ain’t a simple thing to do, there’s no quick fix and there are multiple elements in play here. It isn’t just about protecting Mother Nature – as beautiful as she is. We’ve also got to take care of our communities, our neighbourhoods, the local people that make us tick.

Juggling all this is no small task, and when you think about the big picture there’s a lot to consider, but what are we going to do, bury our heads in the sand and ignore it? ABSOLUTELY NOT. We know we have a responsibility to take care of our people and the planet. So that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF OUR FUTURE

Back in 2022, we started developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy, consisting of a combination of short and long-term goals to work towards over the following five years, all to ensure that we operate as sustainably as possible both now and in the future. These goals aren’t random, they’re based on the globally recognised pillars of sustainability.

The United Nations has an established framework of 17 recommended development goals that are applicable to people, businesses, and countries all over the world.

Given that the number five is pretty important in Penta’s history, we felt it only fitting to select five of these goals with topics that are close to home for us, really commit to them and give it everything we’ve got.

Gender Equality

Reduced Inequalities

Sustainable Cities and Communities

Responsible Consumption and Production

Climate Action

OUR ESG STRATEGY

Ultimately our goal is to be as sustainable as we possibly can be. That isn’t always easy in our line of work, but we’re damn well going to try. Our green strategy is based on the globally recognised pillars of sustainability: Environmental, Social and Governance.

We have zero intention of being all talk and no action, so transparency is key for us. Here are our ambitions that align with those three pillars, and how we plan on achieving them…

ENVIRONMENTAL

SOCIAL

GOVERNANCE

ENVIRONMENTAL: TO BE CLIMATE FRIENDLY

HOW WE WANT TO ACHIEVE IT:

• By tracking and measuring what we use - if we're smart about it, we can maximise efficiency

• Responsible consumption – this can be done in a number of ways such as reducing, reusing and recycling or actively fighting food waste

• Making travel greener – we want to get our guests involved in this process too! For example encouraging bicycle use over car use

SOCIAL: TO TAKE CARE OF OUR COMMUNITY

HOW WE WANT TO ACHIEVE IT:

• By building relationships with the local community - Giving a space and a platform to local musicians and artists. Just generally welcoming the locals with open arms.

• Taking care of our people – people are the heartbeat of Penta. It doesn’t matter if it’s a guest, staff member, or anyone else. If you’re with us, we will do our best to help you in any way we can. Maybe that’s something during your stay, maybe it's in the benefits we offer our staff, it could be any number of things.

• Building partnerships with our suppliers and guests – we’re not expecting to go hero mode and try and do it all on our own. We’ll share our values with our guests and our suppliers and clients in order to build strong and lasting relationships.

GOVERNANCE: TO STRIVE TO DO GOOD

HOW WE WANT TO ACHIEVE IT:

• By committing to our ESG strategy, embracing it and living it EVERY SINGLE DAY. What’s the use planning and talking if you aren’t going to truly act on it?

KEEP YOUR STAY GREEN

You could make your stay even better by taking just a few sustainable actions and lending Mother Nature a helping hand...

And hey, don’t hesitate to give us a shout if you spot anything out of the ordinary (water leaks, malfunctioning lighting systems, etc.). We are there to make your stay as smooth as possible.

. Remember to turn off the lights and electronics when you leave your room
. Take advantage of the daylight -  throw those curtains open and get some vitamin D
. Need some fresh air? Make sure you turn off the air conditioning before opening the window

. Keep your showers short and sweet

. Use the smaller flush button on the toilet when you can

. Your towels will be replaced with fresh ones if you leave them on the floor but, why not  reuse them? You wouldn’t just use them once at home!

. Why not take the stairs when possible? Hitting your daily step count is better for both you and the environment anyway, right?

. All our bathroom amenities are eco friendly  - use them with pride!

. Our breakfast buffet is awesome. Try it for yourself, taste the local products and enjoy a morning meal free from plastic packaging

. Avoid food waste - Take all you want, but eat all you take (and remember: you can always come back for a second round. And a third. And a fourth...)

. Ask our staff for the most efficient ways to travel by public transport

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In case you were wondering, here are a few questions we often get asked about green or sustainable topics…

Your room can be cleaned every day if that’s what you really want, but it’s mostly likely not necessary, so why waste the resources and energy?

We do! We already have some popular options across our menus and we are always looking to expand.

This is an ongoing process for us, obviously it isn’t that you can just change these things overnight, but it’s certainly the end goal for us.

Plastic keycards remain a sustainable option for our hotel operations due to their durability, reusability, and compatibility with electronic systems. They can be recycled and reused multiple times, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.
