Your lively neighbourhood hotel
You know what, when you’ve been in this business as long as we have, you learn a few things. Sure, you’ve got to live in the present, savour the moment and not let life pass you by. That’s not all though. You have to keep an eye on the future, or else you’ll end up with nothing left to savour at all.
This ain’t a simple thing to do, there’s no quick fix and there are multiple elements in play here. It isn’t just about protecting Mother Nature – as beautiful as she is. We’ve also got to take care of our communities, our neighbourhoods, the local people that make us tick.
Juggling all this is no small task, and when you think about the big picture there’s a lot to consider, but what are we going to do, bury our heads in the sand and ignore it? ABSOLUTELY NOT. We know we have a responsibility to take care of our people and the planet. So that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
Back in 2022, we started developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy, consisting of a combination of short and long-term goals to work towards over the following five years, all to ensure that we operate as sustainably as possible both now and in the future. These goals aren’t random, they’re based on the globally recognised pillars of sustainability.
The United Nations has an established framework of 17 recommended development goals that are applicable to people, businesses, and countries all over the world.
Given that the number five is pretty important in Penta’s history, we felt it only fitting to select five of these goals with topics that are close to home for us, really commit to them and give it everything we’ve got.
Gender Equality
Reduced Inequalities
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Responsible Consumption and Production
Climate Action
Ultimately our goal is to be as sustainable as we possibly can be. That isn’t always easy in our line of work, but we’re damn well going to try. Our green strategy is based on the globally recognised pillars of sustainability: Environmental, Social and Governance.
We have zero intention of being all talk and no action, so transparency is key for us. Here are our ambitions that align with those three pillars, and how we plan on achieving them…
We know we can’t do everything alone. We recognise the strength and the benefits of solidarity and collaboration. That’s why our partnerships are carefully considered, and with some great companies and organisations. Here are a few of them:
These legends are on a mission to inspire people to be proactive and take action against food waste. We’ve been listed on the app since 2023, and in that time over 18,295 meals have been prevented from being thrown away.
Recup is a circular economy initiative designed to reduce the waste generated by single-use coffee cups through a system that allows customers to borrow and return cups at participating locations. It operates primarily in Germany, so you can make use of it in all our German properties.
Some good friends of ours. Unsurprisingly given the name, they focus on planting trees.
They also address all 17 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which aligns with the baseline of our own ESG strategy. In 2023 we planted 2200 trees in Ghana with them through our Green room initiative.
An innovative cloud-based desktop platform which allows us to measure our sustainable metrics, such as electricity, gas, and water. This means we can make a way more meaningful analysis of what we are using, or potentially wasting.
In case you were wondering, here are a few questions we often get asked about green or sustainable topics…
Your room can be cleaned every day if that’s what you really want, but it’s mostly likely not necessary, so why waste the resources and energy?
We do! We already have some popular options across our menus and we are always looking to expand.
This is an ongoing process for us, obviously it isn’t that you can just change these things overnight, but it’s certainly the end goal for us.
Plastic keycards remain a sustainable option for our hotel operations due to their durability, reusability, and compatibility with electronic systems. They can be recycled and reused multiple times, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.
