The Penta Guide to a Wholesome Time in Leipzig
We probably don’t need to explain to you at this point that Leipzig is a lively and energetic, hyper-trendy city with plenty of options for partying and enjoying yourself without too much restraint. But what if you are looking for something decidedly more wholesome to do? Regardless of whether you are all partied out, you’re travelling with a young family, or just fancy something a little more easygoing, here are a few options for a WHOLESOME TIME IN LEIPZIG…
Zoo Leipzig
We’re going to start with a big one. Zoo Leipzig isn’t just any old zoo. It’s one of the most modern and innovative zoos in the world, and that’s despite being almost 150 years old. Aside from being committed to conservation and sustainability (which gets a big thumbs up from us), the enclosures are designed to mimic the animals' natural habitats. The park itself is divided into six themed worlds that will take you across various continents and countries. There are quite literally hundreds of animals (and even more plants than that!), and naturally, there are keeper talks and feeding sessions, and if you book in advance, guided tours are available too.
BELANTIS
Our next option is also divided into six themed worlds… Belantis is an amusement park just a short distance away from the city. As long as you aren’t expecting Disneyland or some other giant theme park, we think you might be pleasantly surprised here. It is designed and built around a lake, and has more than 60 attractions and shows, varying in intensity from soft (tailored towards kids) to intense (usually horror or creepy stuff for adults).
Leipzig by Canoe
Want to see the city from a different perspective? One of the best options for doing that is to rent a canoe in the city harbour. They have a range of boats from one-seater kayaks if you want to go solo, up to five-seaters if you are travelling with friends or family. They also have flexible options for duration. 1 hour, 2, 3,4 even 8 hours if you really want to make a day of it. Worried about your lack of experience? Don’t be, the boats are tilt-resistant and they have life jackets available on demand.
Kunstskraftwerk
Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig is Germany's first permanent museum solely focused on digital and multimedia art. Housed in an old, abandoned power plant, it is packed with various immersive exhibitions, digital installations and cool events. Just a heads up though, it is usually closed Monday to Wednesday, and open Thursday through Sunday. You also need tickets for a specific appointment time. The best thing to do is check out their website directly.
Pentahotel Leipzig
You didn’t think we could really compile a guide like this without including our very own favourite spot in Leipzig, did you? In our defence, there is good reason! Firstly, there’s the Pentalounge where you can eat delicious food and drink tasty drinks, kick back on a comfy sofa, socialise or play games. Alternatively, you could break a sweat in the fitness centre or sauna, or even take a dip in the pool. Don’t fancy any of that? There’s still your private room with a big comfy bed, TV and good WiFi.
