Big Sounds at the Kassel City Summer Festival
Every year, the Stadtsommer Kassel (aka the City Summer Festival) brings a packed line-up of live music, cultural events and sporty moments. Expect everything from indie and techno to classical... there’s genuinely something here for every taste.
The highlight this year? Milky Chance meets the Staatsorchester on 23 August. Indie pop and classical music will come together in the beautiful Karlsaue park for an unforgettable night. Plus, Milky Chance are actually from Kassel, so it’s a homecoming gig!
The Staatsorchester will also be sticking around in Karlsaue the following night to perform iconic movie tracks under the stars. The Sound of Hollywood on 24 August is another one for the calendar: Think goosebumps and good vibes, and all against a seriously picturesque backdrop.
For the Romantics (and the Movie Buffs): Open-Air Cinema at Dock 4
Lights off, stars on, film rolling... welcome to Kassel’s open-air cinema. Every summer, Dock 4 screens recent favourites and timeless classics in the great outdoors. Bring a blanket, get comfy and enjoy a proper summer movie night. Snacks and drinks are available, and yes, the screenings happen come rain or shine. Just cuddle up under a brolly and make it part of the moment.
Fountains, Lights & Magic: Water Shows at Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe
No trip to Kassel is complete without a visit to Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. This UNESCO-listed park is home to Löwenburg Castle, Schloss Wilhelmshöhe, the famous cascades, Hercules statue, and some seriously impressive waterworks.
From spring to autumn, the park’s fountains and cascades come to life in a show that’s both impressive and beautiful. But for something even more special, don’t miss the Illuminated Water Displays on 12 and 13 September. The park glows with colourful lights, and there’s a full programme of tours and a special exhibition at the castle. Entry is free, so what are you waiting for?
90s Super Show: Get Ready to Sing Your Heart Out
Feeling nostalgic? On 16 August, the Kassel Exhibition Grounds transform into the biggest 90s party in Europe. The 90s Super Show is your ticket to a night of dancing, singing, and pure throwback joy.
Live on stage: Captain Jack, Loona, Snap!, Caught in the Act and more. Grab your friends, bring your best dance moves, and get ready for a serious earworm or two. Just don’t blame us when “Rhythm is a Dancer” is still stuck in your head a week later.
For the Sporty Ones: Kassel Marathon
Looking to stay active during your visit? Sure, you can make use of our gym but the Kassel Marathon might be the thing if you want to stretch your legs a little more. From 6–8 September 2025, the city becomes one big running track. Whether you’re in for the full marathon, half marathon, relay or kids’ run, there’s a place for you (and your running shoes).
Not running? No worries! The atmosphere along the route is still electric for spectators, with food, music, and entertainment throughout the weekend. Plus, the participants are always grateful for extra support!
