Hiking in the Highlands

Not all who wander are lost. Wondering about things to do in Inverness during your holidays? Hiking in the Capital of the Highlands can provide a unique experience.

Inverness is packed with castles and cathedrals; the River Ness runs through the centre and for most hikers Scotland evokes images of majestic Highland scenery.

What better way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty than by exploring the walks near Inverness? Choose between these options for beginners, families, one-day walks or longer walks.

1. For a one-day walk guests can choose The Loch Affric Circuit, an 11-mile hike above Loch Affric with moorland sceneries, fine pinewood and mountains above.

2. Ever heard the tales about the Old Man of Hoy? Part of the British climbing folklore, this monolithic stack soars out of the Atlantic Ocean and works as a magnet for climbing enthusiasts. A spectacular landmark, it rises to a height of 450 feet (137m) and it’s one of the most famous hikes in Scotland.

3. The highest hill around Loch Ness is Meall Fuar-mhonaidh; it rises up to 699m high and is recommended for experienced hikers. A straightforward hill walk with a panoramic view that can extend as far as Ben Nevis. At the end the effort is rewarded with heart-stopping Highland beauty.

4. Craig Phadrig is located west of Inverness and the hill can be seen from most parts of the city. Pay a visit to the site of the ancient fort with great views over the Beauly Firth.

These four epic walking routes should get you in the mood to dust off your hiking boots and hit a trail. Enjoy your stay at Pentahotel Inverness and your room, ideal for a post-hike well-deserved rest.
