Brussels: Museums, Weekends, and something sour

Start at Belgian Beer World, the interactive beer museum inside the historic Bourse building, where you can trace Belgium's brewing story and finish with a tasting at the rooftop bar overlooking the city.

Belgian Beer Weekend (4 to 6 September 2026) turns the Grand Place into one enormous open-air bar: more than 500 Belgian beers from over 50 breweries, live music, and parades. Entry is free, you just top up a card for the tastings. Genuinely an awesome way to wrap up the summer.

Feeling adventurous? Brussels and the Senne Valley are the historic birthplace of lambic, the wild-fermented sour beer that's been made here since at least the 1800s. Wild yeasts, spontaneous fermentation, and a taste that splits a room. One sip and you'll either be confused or converted. Possibly both.

Good for: festival planners, sour beer converts, anyone who thinks a UNESCO square makes an excellent beer garden.

Liège: Craft beer goodness and oh so many steps

Pentahotel Liège sits right on the doorstep of Le Carré, the compact grid of streets where the city does its drinking. For something craftier, head to Brasserie , whose tasting room, restaurant and terrace occupy the Béguinage du Saint-Esprit, a building dating to 1611, at the foot of the Montagne de Bueren. The beer itself has been brewed since 2019 at their own site, La Fabrique , across town in Saint-Léonard. Their Curtius blond is the local hero, and that Béguinage terrace is one of the loveliest spots in the city to drink it.

Our tip: climb the 374 steps of the Bueren staircase first. The view from the top is great, and it makes the beer at the bottom taste even better.

Liège doesn't stop there. The city proudly calls itself a Beerlovers City, with craft breweries open to visitors across the region and beer festivals running through the year, including a summer edition.

Good for: The craft beer curious, terrace connoisseurs, anyone who likes their refreshment with a sense of achievement.

Leuven: The beer capital that started it all

Pentahotel Leuven puts you in a city that has been brewing since all the way back in 1366. It’s also the home of Stella Artois, first brewed in 1926, and now part of AB InBev, the world's largest brewer. They are still headquartered right here in Leuven, and guided tours run most weekends, from malt to bottling line, all finishing with a freshly poured Stella. Afterwards, head to the Oude Markt, a square ringed entirely by bars and known locally as “the longest bar in Europe”. On a warm summer evening, with the terraces full and the Gothic town hall glowing down the road, it's easy to see why.

Good for: lager loyalists, brewery tour fans, anyone who wants their beer with a side of Gothic architecture.
