Beetlejuice

A still from the movie beetlejuice

Would you look at that, spooky season is upon us again, and that can only mean one thing… it’s time for us to review a horror movie! Thanks to the enormous buzz around a particular long-awaited sequel recently hitting cinema screens, it was an easy choice for us… That’s right, we’re revisiting one of the most delightfully bizarre films ever made. It’s Tim Burton’s quirky, creepy, cult classic tale of “the ghost with the most!” …BEETLEJUICE.

Now, given that it first hit screens over 35 years ago back in 1988 and is still held in high regard today, we’re going to assume a lot of you have seen it. BUT, for those of you that haven’t, here’s a quick recap…

Alec Baldwin and Gina Davis are the Maitlands, a super cute and very much in love young couple. After they die in a tragic accident, they realise they’re stuck in their house as ghosts. Navigating the afterlife is already tough enough for them, but when the obnoxious family the Deetzes move in and start redecorating, the Maitlands decide they need to take action and scare them away.

Being as kind, sweet, and normal as they are, this doesn’t come easily to them. They need outside help… enter “Betelgeuse” a crude, mischievous, and eccentric ‘bio-exorcist’. Will he help them, or will he just end up causing chaos instead? We’ll leave you to fill in the blanks…

Joining Baldwin and Davis is a strong cast, predominantly headed up by the legendary Michael Keaton, who delivers an amazingly unhinged performance as the titular character, and a young Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, the goth daughter of the Deetz family and the only living person that can see the ghosts.

But, for all the strong performances, it wouldn’t mean much without the input of director Tim Burton. His signature style flourishes in this movie, from the surreal landscapes and set design to the quirky characters and effects. His mix of dark humour and spooky but not-too-scary visuals all come together to make an eclectic mix of creepy, funny and whimsical.

We can’t speak for ‘Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice’ (early reviews are solid and box office numbers are big) but regardless or not of whether you’re planning on seeing the sequel, we can definitely recommend that you get yourself in the mood for Halloween by revisiting this iconic classic. It’s creepy and quirky, but also playful and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

We can ALSO recommend that you follow us on Instagram. Where maybe, just maybe you will find information about Halloween at Penta and trust us… you don’t want to miss out on this.
