Friday Afternoon: Get Your Bearings
Check into Pentahotel Leipzig and resist the pull of your room and the super comfy bed. The Pentalounge should be your first stop - part bar, part social hub, and the kind of space you actually want to linger in. This is the perfect time to order a Gose, a traditional, regional beer. Sour, tart, and slightly salty, and with a brewing history stretching back to the 16th century. It's the ideal introduction to Leipzig (and also excellent on a hot day)!
When you're ready to explore, Augustusplatz is just an eight-minute walk from the front door. The largest square in the city, it’s a great place to start exploring.
Saturday Morning: KarLi and the Flea Market
After hitting the breakfast buffet, we recommend you start Saturday on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße or as it’s more commonly known “KarLi”. This is Leipzig's indie high street: independent cafes, record shops, vintage boutiques, and very few chain stores in sight.
On the first Saturday of each month, the open-air Feinkost Flea Market runs beneath its distinctive retro neon sign. Vintage vinyl, local art, and second-hand gems galore... Probably smart to get there early before the best stuff goes.
Saturday Afternoon: Get on the Water
Head west to Plagwitz. This former industrial district has reinvented itself without losing any edge - think street art, more independent coffee shops, and one of the best things you can do on a sunny afternoon in any German city...
Rent a kayak or canoe from Bootsverleih Herold and get out onto the Karl-Heine-Kanal. You'll paddle past ivy-covered lofts and converted warehouses, the kind of scenery that makes you feel glad you made the effort. Afterwards, make your way to the Spinnerei. A former cotton mill turned contemporary art complex, it's one of Leipzig's genuinely unmissable spots. Vast, a little wanderable, and easily worth an hour of your time. If you haven’t already had enough coffee, stop at Röstgut inside the complex to grab one to help you explore.
Saturday Night: Where the Locals Go
If you plan well, you can make sure your visit lines up with Leipzig Stadtfest or the Bach Festival, both of which are genuinely great experiences where the city puts on a proper show. But, for a more local Saturday night, the move is straightforward. Pick up drinks and something to eat, head to Clara-Zetkin-Park, and join the masses on the grass for sunset. Hundreds of people, music coming from somewhere, the evening taking care of itself. No entry fee, no tourist menu. Just great vibes and a really good place to be.
Sunday: Wind Down
Before you head home, we recommend you make use of Pentahotel Leipzig's wellness area. The sauna is exactly what you need after a full weekend on your feet, and the indoor pool offers an entirely different, yet still entirely enjoyable floating experience to the kayaks.
