Inverness: Like a local

Insider Tips

Romantic view of a church at a river in Inverness

Inverness: Like a local

Autumn is truly epic in the Scottish Highlands. So, let’s head over to Inverness with our local expert, Vivienne. The city may be small, but you clearly won’t get bored!

1. Where to go to get away from the crowds.
Bellfield Park is the perfect location to unwind and get some space ;) The park is within walking distance from the city centre, and yet you feel immediately at peace as you walk around. It even has an ice cream shop!

2. Any indie shops you recommend?
Far-Fetched is amazing if you are looking for unique clothes and jewellery. Leakey’s Bookshop is one of my favourite second-hand bookstores. The building was once used as a church (!), which gives the bookstore an added charm. And of course, it also boasts an incredible selection of books.

3. A must for music lovers.
Hootananny is definitely one of the best venues for live music. The ground floor has great Scottish ceilidh music. On the first floor, you will be treated to various genres of music each week, ranging from indie to heavy metal. The second floor has a DJ and the very cool Glow bar.

4. Unmissable galleries or museums for any self-respecting art buff?
Castle Gallery Inverness for sure. And if you would like to learn more about Highlands traditions, the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery will give you an interesting insight into the past.

5. The best local market and what to buy there.
The first Saturday of every month, we have a farmers’ market, where you can purchase local delicacies like salmon, venison and cheese.

6. Place you would take your grandma?
The Inverness Botanic Gardens are definitely great to stroll around with your grandma. They are set in in a tranquil environment with a huge variety of plants and flowers to admire. And afterwards you can treat yourselves to some cake and hot drinks in the tearoom.

7. Best local tip: something only residents would know.
I would recommend driving out to the Kessock Bridge to spot some dolphins!
